Looking for X-Men: Fall of the House of X/Rise of the Powers of X? Check out our reading order.
Welcome to a bold new era of X-Men comics! After a few years away from Marvel Comics after his epic run on Avengers and Secret Wars, Jonathan Hickman is back to give the X-Men a massive shake-up.
How? By reinventing Marvel’s mutants. So far he’s created a new status quo for the X-Men, reinvented characters, gave others a new purpose, created a few new characters, brought back forgotten ideas, and wrapped up them in exciting high concept science fiction.
This exciting new era has kicked off two special miniseries called House of X and Powers of X (pronounced Powers of Ten). With art by impressive up-and-coming artists Pepe Larraz and R.B Silva, these pair of six-part series ran over a twelve-week period and set up what’s to come for the X-Men for years to come.
If that has captured your interest, read on to find out more about House of X and Powers of X – including the recommended reading order.

Is this a good place to start reading X-Men?
Yes! House of X and Powers of X are the start of a brand new era of X-Men, which introduce drastically new ideas, reinvent older ones, and give the comics a new feel.
These two series set up years, perhaps even decades, worth of brand new stories.
Is there any required background reading?
Jonathan Hickman’s X-Men comics are not concerned about what has happened in recent X-Men stories. It’s not like they never happened, they have their own ending and don’t specifically lead into House of X or Powers of X.
Additionally, while there are plenty of references to X-Men lore, you don’t need to do any background reading to understand them. If you know them then that’s cool, but you won’t be lost if you don’t.
If you’re the kind of person who NEEDS to know what all of these references are, I can suggest having Wikipedia open while you read these comics. Although, I feel like it’s just best to go with the flow and enjoy the comics.
How are House of X/Powers of X structured?
House of X and Powers of X are two 6-part miniseries that act like two sides of the same coin. Both series are the main book comic is it is recommended that you read both of them to get the full story.

House of X/Powers of X: Chronological Edition
On the 3rd of January 2024, Marvel released aChronological EditionofHouse of XandPowers of XonMarvel Unlimited. As the name suggests, this recuts the two miniseries to have their sequence of events flow in chronological order instead of bouncing around from past, future, and present.
In the introduction to this edition, editor Jordan D. White explains that this is an experiment – inspired by a DVD extra forMemento, which resequenced the film’s events chronologically. He also states that this is not an ideal way to read these two events if you haven’t read them before.
I agree with this. The changing of different timelines is presented in the context of the larger story. Sequencing events in chronological order ruins the effect to a degree. I would suggest only reading this if you’ve already readHouse of XandPowers Xand are looking for a new way to read it.
After House of X/Powers of X
House of X and Powers of X are just the beginning! These two series will set up a new line of X-Men comics known as Dawn of X. These titles explore the new Krakoan status quo, featuring familiar comics (such as X-Men, X-Force, and Wolverine) that are explored in new contexts and a range of miniseries that dive into the new ideas that have been introduced.
