little frustrating trying to be patient, but, you know, be nice to be able to access our money. plus, bracing for a 4th of july heatwave. we're tracking how hot it's going to get ahead of your holiday and san francisco wraps up pride in a way only the city can. thousands lined market street for one of the biggest pride parades in the world. good evening. tonight, a local credit union is dealing with what it's calling a, quote, serious security incident. and it's leaving nearly half a million customers in the dark just before rent and other bills are due. we're talking about patelco, headquartered in dublin. that's where nbc bay area's alyssa goard joins us after speaking to customers who are not only worried about their money, but also what they say is a lack of transparent communication. we're here at patelco dublin headquarters, where there are some atms here,

too, and people have been driving up today in a panic because they can't access their account balances online only they found out here that they can't access their account balances on the atms, either to contact card user erica phillips knew something was off when she couldn't receive a payment for her business. she banks with dublin based patelco credit union and she couldn't get her account information online or over the phone. and it just said , we're experiencing technical difficulties and it hung up like that was it. she went to the branch atm in person to try and make a transfer, but that didn't work either. it took until sunday afternoon for phillips and other patelco customers to get this email from the company, saying on saturday it experienced a, quote, serious security incident which required the company to shut down some systems. in an update sunday night, patelco said electronic transactions like transfers, payments and balance inquiries are still unavailable. it says call centers and customer service will be back open

monday, but expect longer wait times, which tells me that somebody actually inside their network and crippled their ability. so what they have done is like unplugging like an unplugged, you know, the computer, they unplug the network and trying to assess the damage and see how to deal with it. professor ahmed bonafe, who studies cybersecurity, says the extent of the damage to patelco should become clearer in the coming days. in the meantime, make sure you monitor all your financial activities. change your passwords. this all comes at the end of the month, when many mortgage payments, bills and paychecks are due. so hoping tomorrow's going to be payday, but, now, i'm not sure we'll be able to access that or see if it comes in. customers are alarmed. some have been able to withdraw money from atms, but most are worried because they can't see their balance, hoping that the money is still there. i think that's a lot of people's concerns. looking at the comments on the twitter feed is our money safe as a customer?

11:04 pm

you know, i came over to a credit union because i've had so much difficulties with the mainstream banks. but now that i'm having trouble with the patelco bank credit union, i'm considering going to a major bank. i just don't know which one i want to do in dublin. alyssa goard, nbc, bay area news huge story and we are staying on top of it for you. our team posting updates on our website nbcbayarea.com. sending out updates on our free nbc bay area app. let's take you outside now, a live look at dublin right here. a nice warm weekend is wrapping up and it's about to get hotter. bay area is bracing for a heat wave. much of the bay area will be under an excessive heat warning later this week. pg&e is getting ready for the heat to. the utility says public safety power shutoffs are likely in parts of the north bay because of high winds and dry conditions, though only a handful of customers are expected to be impacted. meteorologist rob mayeda is keeping a close eye on all of this for us. hey, rob. yeah, today, likely the coolest of the

next 5 to 7 days, and we did still see those temperatures in the north bay jump into the mid to upper 90s today. santa rosa 9792, in livermore, 86, in san jose. but moving forward, things are about to get a lot hotter as we head towards tuesday. all the areas across the interior, north bay interior, east bay, san jose southward, santa cruz mountains, excessive heat warning that will take us through the end of the week, where we could see 90 to 100 degree temperatures and bayside locations including oakland, hayward, fremont, palo alto could be looking at several days in the 80s and 90s. now, on top of that, at this hour tomorrow night, we're going to be watching a red flag warning taking effect as we start to see north wind. this is a dry wind which is going to drop those humidity levels even overnight into the morning to daytime dry. so with that in mind, there has been an expansion of the red flag warning across some of the higher hilltops there of the north bay, where we'll see slightly stronger wind speeds. nothing too extreme. it's just going to be extremely dry. this

11:06 pm

is from monday night through wednesday, and then as we head towards the middle part of the week, a few areas in the interior east bay could be approaching 110 degrees. we'll talk more about when that peak heat arrives and when we might see some cooler changes ahead in that 7-day forecast coming up in about eight minutes. back to you. a lot of people will be looking forward to that. rob thank you very much. well, this is the last day and night of pride month in san francisco. today celebrated in a way that only it can the annual pride parade, one of the biggest in the nation and the world. hundreds of thousands of people lining market street in san francisco today. you see it there. nbc bay area's thom jensen shows us. the 2024 pride parade kicked off with the perennial roar from san francisco's dikes on bikes as they greeted the hundreds of thousands of people in the city for events this weekend. this is what we're here for diversity coming together. it's really just such a beautiful thing, you know, this whole month and even this weekend, events going on

11:07 pm

all over the city, the whole city comes out to support us. we've been to other prides and other states. there's no other like this one. it's a full weekend of events with music and dancing, yes, but also a place to address the lgbtq plus community's most pressing issues. we have people around the country in different states who are trying to criminalize queer people, trying to ban queer youth, and especially trans kids, a venue that draws thousands of people from across the state every year to a city where they feel safe, proudly showing their true colors. the central valley is a lot more closed minded. gabriella amaya, here with her mom this year, came 100 miles from home in modesto. i'm so happy to be here for the first time, and i'm so proud because she's my daughter. it's amazing to receive the support from my mother. it's our first year, but your mom should be proud and safe in a city that welcomes her and all people with open arms, happy pride thom jensen nbc, bay area news. yeah.

nbc bay area and our sister station telemundo 48, also taking part in the party today. some of our producers and anchors were out there on the parade float dancing and showing their pride. well, hundreds of people boycotted the san francisco pride parade and held a counter march instead. the no pride in genocide march was organized in support of gaza and an immediate cease fire there. demonstrators accused s.f. pride organizers, of accepting sponsorship from companies they see as contributing to the war and humanitarian crisis. they also want bay area politicians to do more in support of palestinians here in the bay area and in gaza. in about 48 hours, vice president harris will be back home in the bay area. she'll be joined tuesday by second gentleman doug emhoff for a political event in san francisco. emhoff was already in the city today as democrats gathered for their annual pride breakfast. several other big names were there, including former house speaker nancy pelosi. both pelosi and emhoff addressed last week's

presidential debate the other day was not a plus for us. we have to be honest about that. but on the other hand, what we saw on one side of the screen, if you see a split screen is integrity, concern for people, answers to questions. what we saw on the other side was dishonesty, misrepresentation, and no concern for people. nothing has changed. donald trump is still unfit to ever return to the white house. donald trump still tried to overthrow a free and fair election and still wouldn't commit to that. during that debate, state senator scott wiener and you can see right here, san francisco mayor london breed also spoke at the event. moraga police have their hands full with at least 15 cases of thefts and burglaries. an alert neighbor tipped officers off about the spree around 630 this morning. a caller reported. people trying car door handles.

11:10 pm

police arrived. they saw the suspects go into a garage where they stole a gray lexus and took off. officers decided not to chase them out of concern for public safety. investigators now say the thieves entered at least 15 different unlocked vehicles. some of those cars had garage door openers inside, allowing access to several houses. some residents are surprised, others are not. a crime is so high all over the state, all over the bay area, that no one's really so isolated that you're not going to get to it. moraga we really think of it as a safe enclave out here in the bay area, but you have to follow common sense rules, and police are now working to identify the suspects who are believed to have committed similar crimes in nearby towns. they are also reminding everyone to keep your cars and houses locked at all times. well police in hayward are investigating a shooting that left two teenagers wounded. one of those teens is now on

11:11 pm

life support. it happened thursday night around 11 near the mission hills golf course. that's near mission and industrial. police say they found the victims blocks away near tennyson park. an 18 year old from pleasanton was shot and is now on life support. the other victim is 17 and also from pleasanton. that person was treated at the hospital and released. anyone with information asked to call hayward police tomorrow morning. the scott peterson case returns to a redwood city courtroom. the hearing is expected to resolve, which dna testing lab will be used to test a piece of duct tape. and who's going to pay for that? testing peterson's new legal team through the innocence project, is working for a new trial. they filed motions to retest several items from the original case last month, though a judge denied all except for one request. talking about a 15 inch piece of tape that was found on laci peterson's pants at the time of her autopsy. peterson himself not going to be in court. the 51 year old is

11:12 pm

serving life in prison for the murder of his wife, laci, and their unborn son, connor, back in 2004. it was a case. it has captivated the nation. here we are 20 years later, we're getting you all caught up on where that case stands and what comes next. our laura garcia sat down with two attorneys who've been tracking that case since 2002, and our jodi hernandez, who interviewed scott peterson back when it all started. watch our half hour special right now on nbcbayarea.com or wherever you stream. still ahead, they are going for gold. the official usa gymnastics team is now set to why simone biles is making extra waves for her age. plus, a number of new laws going into effect tomorrow, including one that would do away with hidden fees. what might that mean for restaurants? we break down what you need to know. and wrapping up the weekend of temperatures earlier today in the mid 90s in walnut creek, when those numbers will climb above 100 degrees, and how long they could stick

11:13 pm

around above 100 degrees could surprise you. and are forecast when we come right back. hey, come on, come on. what you want? getting to an audi and go your own way. find your way to exceptional offers during the summer of audi sales event at your local audi dealer. we've never spoken, but you've told us many things. you told us you love stargazing almost as much as you hate parallel parking. that heavy right foot of yours. we got you the lexus es didn't begin in a studio. it began with you. get special offers on the 2024 es, 350. two. come on, come on. what you want now? getting to an audi and go your own way.

11:14 pm

find your way to exceptional offers during the summer of audi sales event at your local audi dealer. well, who is ready for paris? okay, usa gymnastics and of course, simone biles are. she is officially heading to the olympics again. the goat and she will be surrounded by some familiar and a new face. yeah, it was also a fantastic finish at the us olympic track and field trials today. trials records galore and one world record. how about that? nbc's mark barger has a wrap up of the final day. simone biles made what has been a given official sunday night, winning the olympic trials all around competition to lead the us women's team to paris. i knew i wasn't done after the performances in tokyo, so just getting back in the gym and working hard and trusting the process with the seal and the roar, i knew i'd be back. also named to the squad three of biles, tokyo teammates, including the all around champ suni lee. i can't wait to be

11:15 pm

embarrassed. jordan chiles is also returning. oh yeah, as is jade carey. the one newcomer is hezly rivera, just turned 16 years of age. i cannot be more happy. i'm so. i'm ecstatic. it's going to be a homestretch fight. meanwhile, an exclamation point in the final race of the track and field trials. sydney mclaughlin. lebron. she broke her own world record in the 400 meter hurdles. i'm just amazed, baffled and in shock. it was the capper on a day that saw trials records fall like dominoes in five other races. she's got the double grant fisher setting a mark in the 5000 after his victory in the ten, bryce hoppel blitzed the 800 record with a personal best, and it was a triple for masai russell in the 100 meter hurdles trials record personal best and fastest time in the world this year. i stayed

11:16 pm

true to my work and my craft and this is all god. and in the women's 1500, nikki hiltz goes to the lead and she added to the run of trials records just off the american mark to earn her first olympic trip to the city of light. mark barger, nbc news. again the opening and of course, nbc bay area is your home for all things olympics tomorrow morning, the official usa women's gymnastics team are going to sit down with hoda kotb for their very first interview. you can watch that exclusive interview right here on today. well, tomorrow is july 1st, which means a host of new california laws will be taking effect. but even though a new junk fee ban starts tomorrow, restaurants will be exempt thanks to a last minute change by the governor. nbc bay area's marianne favro is in campbell, with reactions from diners. some diners are not happy with the last minute change. they wanted to see all service fees eliminated at restaurants, but they do welcome increased

11:17 pm

transparency on the menus at bustling luna restaurant in campbell. people checking out the menu found a 3.5% surcharge on food and beverages listed at the bottom. that fee can stay thanks to an emergency measure introduced by bay area state senator bill dodd. when a statewide ban on hidden charges at hotels and for concert goes into effect tomorrow, restaurants will be exempt. dodd says he didn't want the junk fee ban to inadvertently harm food service workers and small businesses. we have restaurants going out of business every single day. but dodd says the new legislation will require restaurants to clearly disclose any additional charges. we made it very, very clear they can't just charge it without putting it in clear, concise type on the menu. every single page of the menu, making sure we just want to make sure that when people get their bill, everything that's on that bill, there are

11:18 pm

no surprises. some diners we spoke with tonight in campbell support the move. i don't think it's a bad thing that they're still there because i know it's going towards the workers. ideally it should be going towards the workers, so i don't mind it. and at least i can now price out what i want beforehand without getting surprised when i get the check. i appreciate the transparency always, but some told us they wish the state had just eliminated all restaurant service fees. the california restaurant association says the change will enable restaurants to continue to support increased pay equity and to make contributions to worker health care and other benefits. not all restaurants will be impacted. rock bottom brewery says they never charged a service fee. restaurants will now have one year to make sure that the notification of the service fees on the menus meets the legal definition of clear and conspicuous. in campbell, marianne favro nbc bay area news. and another bill we've been following for months now,

11:19 pm

also in effect tomorrow. ab 13 1013 the no roofies law. it requires certain bars and nightclubs to sell or give away date rape testing kits to customers. those businesses will also have to post signage informing customers the drug testing kits are available and renters take note. any new rental contracts for housing signed after tomorrow will only require one month's security deposit. that is thanks to ab 12, any existing rental agreements that required larger deposits are not affected. landlords can still ask for additional fees at the end of a lease if there is damage that exceeds one month's deposit and starting tomorrow, sb 244 will make it easier and cheaper to get your iphone fixed. the right to repair act will require manufacturers to provide you and repair shops with parts, tools and instructions needed to service or repair devices. the law also applies to any cell phones that cost more than $50, as well as home appliances and electronic devices like tvs and video recording equipment. of course, here we are july 4th

11:20 pm

week sales of so-called safe and sane fireworks are picking up across the bay area we stopped by a fireworks stand in san bruno today. they told us they have been busy, but they expect to sell about 80% of their supply right there on the day on the 4th of july. the stand is raising money for local boy scouts and girl scout troops. they say they feel confident selling these fireworks because they're less likely to start a fire. we know the fireworks. we sell are the type where you either set them on the ground, light them and step back and watch the show or the simpler sparklers that someone can hold and won't worry about getting burned. yeah, safe and sane. fireworks are only sold through july 6th. state officials are reminding the public to make sure the fireworks they buy have the safe and sane label any other fireworks, especially the kind that fly in the air. those are illegal. anyone who is caught with them can be fined. between 1000 and $2000. the recommendation by most

11:21 pm

authorities leave the fireworks to the pros, and the message from many bay area agencies. yeah, let the big guys do it. they know what they're doing. from parades of fireworks shows. we've compiled a list of safe ways to celebrate the fourth all across the bay area. just point your smartphone camera at the qr code you see right there on your screen, or head to nbcbayarea.com. click the link at the top and the trending bar. a heads up if you're heading to tahoe for the fourth, alcohol is once again temporarily banned at three of the lake's most popular beaches for the holiday, as well as chambers landing in tahoma. the forest service says the ban is back to make sure visitors and residents respect the area. violations come with fines of up to $5,000 for individuals and up to $10,000 for organizations. the beaches included in the ban are nevada beach zephyr, cove resort and zephyr shoals. all right, rob mayeda, the man of the hour here. you look at that forecast. next couple of days, some people creep in 105, 110 degrees. none of it's good.

11:22 pm

yeah. you got you got big temperatures and staying power. it looks like 5 to 7 days for that. some of our inland valleys. so with all the 4th of july festivities going, going. you got this excessive heat warning and increasing fire danger. and fortunately peaking right around the middle part of the week. so we have outside right now temperatures in the 60s and low 70s. this will be the coolest night that we'll also experience because later on at this hour, i think we're still going to be seeing 70s and 80s outside starting as early as tomorrow. right now, 64, you got the clear skies in san jose. you can see out towards walnut creek. earlier we had a high of 94 degrees 70 right now and back into san francisco. some areas of low clouds, maybe some patchy drizzle or mist for the morning, 56 degrees after a picture perfect day with a high of 70. so tomorrow morning, areas of low clouds around the coastline, some spotty drizzle there, 50s and 60s to start. now notice the trend as we move forward into the afternoon forecast. inland east bay now in the mid to upper

11:23 pm

90s we saw a little bit of that around the north bay today. so that heat starts to set up across the interior east bay and areas south of san jose into the 90s. and as high pressure throttles up from about tuesday into wednesday, this is when we see the heat advisories around the central bay area. this is the areas in orange for 80s and 90s possible. the areas you see here in that fuchsia color or the pink excessive heat warning starting tuesday, at least through friday. so now look at the impact on temperatures. keep in mind a lot of areas bay side, including san francisco to oakland and those 80s and 90s. you don't have air conditioning, so you want to plan ahead, maybe head out to the movie theater mall or library where you have some of that cooler air because you're not going to get it from the ocean there on tuesday. inland areas in the 90s to above 100 degrees and two days for concord and livermore. we could see highs from about 103 to 110 degrees 90 and 100 degree temperatures across the north bay, even downtown san jose heading into morgan hill. seeing those hot temperatures now for

11:24 pm

the 4th of july, a little bit of cooling, but still in the 80s around san francisco to oakland. while those inland east bay communities and areas south of san jose and the north bay still seeing those upper 90s to above 100 degrees. so keep in mind those heat warnings and the heat advisories technically in effect until friday, but watch what happens in the upper air charts here as you move forward into the weekend. the high kind of holds its position. what we need to see it is to go to the east and see a stratus surge come up the coast, really not seeing that in the extended forecast. so when we're talking about some cooling around the inner bay, hayward into next weekend could drop into the mid 80s. so that's just a little bit of cooling bay side. but look at these inland areas. this map really stands out. look at livermore. the potential of 7 to 10 days near 100 degrees. so keep that in mind. in those east bay valleys, tri valley, especially downtown san francisco, oakland. warmest days likely to be tuesday

11:25 pm

through thursday. but really, it's these valley temperatures. we've been really lucky this year. we've had like 1 to 2 day heat events, and then they go away. this one right now the model trend is to take it even further into the following week. so once it sets up tuesday through friday, we could still see some of these conditions, even into and through next weekend, especially in those east bay valleys. and folks, you probably know what to do. there are going to be opening cooling centers, stay hydrated and check on people who you know might need some help. you know, for whatever reason. just keep in mind your neighbors. absolutely. all right, rob, thank you. well, coming up, stealing joy in the south bay. what a thief. snagged from a movie theater in campbell . everyone needs to be prepared for wildfires and nbc bay area responds can help with a fire resource page on our website. just go to nbcbayarea.com. slash wildfire help and bookmark the page. there you'll find a lot of

a live look at the golden gate bridge right now. a beautiful bridge and boy, it's going to start getting more and more expensive over the next few years. starting tomorrow, for example, drivers will be spending a little more every single time they cross. the toll is jumping by $0.50 to a 1025 for some drivers, all in an effort to remedy a budget deficit of $220 million. you've got the fast track. it goes from 875 to 925. so it depends on how you pay, how much more you're paying but you're paying more. that's for sure. this was passed by the golden gate bridge highway and transportation district back in march. the agency has already been increasing tolls on the bridge by $0.35 per year since 2019. this $0.50 per year that's going to be going in for the next five years, every single year, for the next five years. it will be more than 11 bucks per cross. by the time that finishes up. well employees at a south bay movie theater are feeling mixed emotions tonight after someone stole their joy. cut out. it

of things you need to win. and we'll continue to pursue those to baseball. the giants hanging ten on the dodgers. and so was that fan the giants blowing it open in the fourth already up five. nothing patrick bailey with the hot shot past the hot corner two run score on the double to left. the giants hit ten doubles in the game. the most in franchise history in 112 years. a few batters later, matt chapman goes on a power trip that's a two run shot. the giants beat the dodgers ten four. it's their first series win at home against the dodgers in two years. you know, being able to win the first one like we did and then, you know, lose yesterday was just you know pretty dramatic is dramatic as the wind was the night before. to be able to come back and respond like that, win a series because we have to start winning series. we got to roll some games together leading up to the break, and this was a good start in what is kind of a tough

11:36 pm

stretch right now for the a's, wrapping up their series in the valley of the sun history. in the fifth inning, zack gelof with a solo home run to left that just clears the outfielders glove. check it out. yeah, yeah, it's gone. it's the 9,000th home run in oakland franchise history, but the diamondbacks would score three runs in the seventh at another one in the eighth. arizona wins it 5 to 1. the a's have dropped eight of their last ten games. that's a look at sports. more news after the break. honda's are on sale now during the july 4th sales event from 249 a month. gas or hybrid gets 614 miles per tank and the battery charges as you drive with hybrids. ask anyone who owns a honda and search your local honda dealer. okay y'all, we got ten orders coming in, starting in business is never easy, but starting at eight months pregnant, that's a different story. i couldn't slow down. we were starting a business from the ground up. people were showing up, left and right, and so did our business needs. the chase inc. car made

11:38 pm

behind phoenix. nbc's valerie castro went there to check them out firsthand to see what's working and what's not. here in phoenix, robo taxis are a hot ride. open up the app, choose a destination, and just a few moments later. all right, the car's here. i'm going to use the app to unlock it. no way. we go. hello, valerie. so we just hopped in the waymo. there is no driver behind the wheel, and we're going to go pick up the mayor of phoenix. the robo taxi owned by google parent company alphabet takes us for a smooth while cautious ride, the steering wheel turning as if an invisible hand is guiding it. and when we get to a stop sign complete stop, we reach our destination with no issues. we've arrived. good morning. good morning. how are you? excellent. phoenix mayor kate gallego is a big fan of waymo. drivers don't have the kind of bad days that that human drivers

11:39 pm

do. do you think this is safer than an actual human being behind the wheel? the technology can see so many more things and process it so much more quickly. i think in the long term it will be safer. why is this working so well here in phoenix? i think we've been very open to the technology and there have been some political challenges in other communities that we have not had. we have an open grid system of streets. and so i think that is probably a little bit easier to navigate. but incidents like this low speed crash into a telephone pole in may, leading to a software recall of its phoenix fleet, more than 600 cars, the robo taxis caught on camera making other mistakes, turning into oncoming traffic in tempe, swerving in and out of its lane, driving into a construction zone and ignoring an officer's instructions to pull to the side of the road. sir, there's no one there. waymo, declining to comment on specific incidents, but adding that they continue to

11:40 pm

refine the technology. waymo is the subject of an investigation by the national highway traffic safety administration for various collisions, saying several incidents involved collisions with clearly visible objects that a competent driver would be expected to avoid. waymo saying in part, nhtsa plays a very important role in road safety, and we will continue to work with them as part of our mission to become the world's most trusted driver. in other cities, driverless taxis are also making headlines. waymo going the wrong way a cruise vehicle owned by general motors and a competitor of waymo's, running over and dragging a woman who had just been struck by a hit and run driver last year in san francisco in a statement, cruise said its car braked aggressively to minimize the impact with the woman after the other car launched the pedestrian directly in front of the cruise vehicle. regulators temporarily suspending the company's permits. waymo criticized for causing traffic jams and stopping in the middle of the street. hi. how are you?

11:41 pm

crossing guards telling nbc bay area they've nearly been hit in the crosswalk. it did not recognize me in the intersection, but back in phoenix, waymo says it's growing, dominating 315mi■!s around the city. the largest metro area it serves in the country, and it's the only robotaxi that picks up and drops off at a major airport. andrew maynard is a professor at arizona state university school for the future of innovation in society. waymo, as other companies that are developing similar technologies are still learning, so it's not 100% safe if we have a technology that occasionally runs into poles, maybe that's the price to pay for developing technology, which will ultimately, hopefully be safer than humans. removing the human element is why a community group called phoenix babes, who walk, partnered with the company, calling it a safer option for women and members of marginalized groups traveling alone who might encounter a bad experience with a rideshare driver. we've had folks who are

11:42 pm

gay or lesbian, and they're afraid to get into their car and hold their spouse's hand because of what might happen with their driver, comments that may come up, unsolicited while the tech continues to improve, some believe it could become the norm down the road. to me, the most exciting scenario is that we use self-driving cars as a stepping stone to a future where we have completely rethought transportation. today is the first day that the general public, as we've mentioned, anyone in san francisco, is now able to hop in a waymo. until now, you had to get on a wait list before you could get a ride. sergio quintana took us for a ride with from the civic center to the ferry building. no driver, of course. head to our website, nbcbayarea.com to go along with him. new at 11. federal prosecutors plan to seek a guilty plea from boeing over a charge tied to two deadly plane crashes. boeing is accused of misleading a federal regulator in the development of the 737 max, their flight control system

11:43 pm

was implicated in two 737 max crashes that killed 346 people in 2018 and 2019. earlier this year, after a door panel blew out of a new max nine, the justice department said that boeing violated an earlier settlement by failing to implement a compliance program. the plea deal the doj wants would require boeing to pay a fine of about 2247 million and require an outside monitor, attorneys for the victims families are blasting the deals as a slap on the wrist. okay, when there is an emergency on a vta bus in the south bay, drivers and passengers rely on the sheriff's deputies to respond. taxpayers shell out millions of dollars a year for the sheriff's protection, but nbc bay area investigative reporter candice nguyen found most of the time when deputies respond, there's really no emergency. there's a silent panic alarm vta bus operators can press for help. it turns out they do it a lot, usually by accident. deputies say 80% of

11:44 pm

bus emergencies that they respond to are false alarms. and the transit agency doesn't think it's a problem. we've shown you this security video before. a vta bus driver, carlos zarate, his close call with a machete wielding passenger. i really can't make this turn. if there's anyone who understands the importance of a bus system. silent panic button. it's him. he told me. make this u-turn or else you're going to start bleeding. and that's when i decided to do what he said while his bus was being, zarate pressed the panic button. deputies responded and he walked away unharmed. this was a legitimate emergency that we found is rather rare in these cases. 2023, for example, a little over 80% of the alarm calls we got were sheriff's dispatch were notified were false alarms. over 80? yes, captain jose cardoza is in

11:45 pm

charge of santa clara county sheriff's transit patrol division, which responds to vta's calls. what is your reaction to that? over 80% are false alarms. well, i think it's high. santa clara valley transportation authority has a 12 to $14 million annual contract with the sheriff's office, according to documents we obtained through the california public records act. public money pays for deputies who are contractually obligated to respond to every single call, including all those false alarms. what kind of negative impacts are these false alarms having on what could be real emergencies? yeah, good. good question. so and we don't know right. both cardoza and vta bus operators we spoke to say the false alarms are the result of procedure and design issues with many of the busses. the issues they say, make it too easy for operators to accidentally hit the button. yes. ashton green, vta chief of system safety and

11:46 pm

security, says the agency is aware of this. there are plans to improve that technology, but 80, 80, that's fine. what that means to me is that that's an opportunity for our sheriff's deputies to make contact with an operator. one of the things that we want to be able to do with our law enforcement and our emergency management philosophy is work those muscles for emergencies, right? but what about concerns that this could lead to real emergencies being accidentally dismissed, or possibly wasting public safety resources? not a waste because we contract with the sheriff's department to be on our system while we're paying them. it does put an impact on our resources, obviously, because there's so many false alarms and with so many false alarms. zarate hopes real emergencies like his don't get overlooked. we need help. i hope they could get to us. we don't have anything to protect ourselves. we reached out to some of the other agencies. ac transit wouldn't comment, saying it may undermine their

11:47 pm

technology. sfmta and sam trans told us they're not experiencing this issue with the investigative unit. i'm candice nguyen, nbc bay area news. still ahead, one of the earliest category four hurricanes barreling toward land where and when it's expected to hit, and plan on some comfortable temperatures for tomorrow morning with some patchy low clouds. but the week ahead certainly not comfortable with 90s and one hundredths across much of the bay area for a few days. we'll have a closer look when we come right back. moving the bay area forward, that's why we investigate. it's about helping people. se trata de ayudar a la gente. digging deeper to expose the truth. it's about challenging power, making sure your voice is heard and finding solutions because progress means a better future for everyone. nbc bay area's investigative unit moving the

item between 6 and 11 a.m. at jack every bite's a big deal. welcome to jack in the box. well, extremely dangerous situation is developing in the caribbean. hurricane beryl is now a category four storm. the u.s. national hurricane center says it's becoming more dangerous as it inches toward the windward islands. beryl emerged in the central tropical atlantic on friday and has become the earliest category four hurricane on record. a hurricane warning is in effect for barbados and much of the windward islands. people on those islands are being told to brace for up to six inches of rain. a real early start to a hurricane season. yeah, and storm surge. there could be several feet too. so that is a big concern. wind speeds too. we'll give you the latest on the tropics before we talk about some desert. like heat setting up for the bay area here. now the latest on hurricane barbara. right now it has weakened just very slightly back down to category three. likely with an eyewall replacement cycle happening right now as we do

11:51 pm

expect the storm to re-intensify as we head towards tomorrow morning, continuing the same path off to the west northwest. they're back to category four, traveling south of the dominican republic, and then by the middle part of the week, we could see those hurricane force winds reaching jamaica as we head into tuesday, late into wednesday. and there you see the storm there, and you can see the wind field associated with it by wednesday as it continues to track westward through the caribbean. now closer to home. pretty comfortable finish to the weekend, but this is what we have moving forward. an extended duration heat wave, the hottest temperatures of the year and it's going to last for a while. you combine the hot days and warm nights together, very high fire danger, especially for grass fires over the next couple of days and eventually we might see spare the air days, depending on how much wind we get around the inner bay later on this week. now tomorrow morning starts off pretty comfortable. in fact, you might need a light jacket, 50s and 60s for the morning with some patchy low clouds. and like we saw today by lunchtime, mostly 80s to low 90s inland. but unlike

11:52 pm

today, a chance of more mid to upper 90s inland for the inner east bay still 70 near san francisco 80s in oakland, then 86 in san jose for tomorrow. but then as high pressure strengthens now, here's where the excessive heat warning takes effect. starting tuesday and the heat advisory for bayside communities into the 80s and 90s, which includes san francisco now could see mid to upper 80s around downtown. some 90s bayside. those temperatures east of 680, you're anywhere from 103 to maybe close to 110 degrees, 96 degrees in san jose, 90s and hundreds across the north bay tuesday and wednesday right now look to be the hottest days of the week, with 80s and 90s bayside, more 90s to above 100 degree temperatures. look at that out towards solano and contra costa counties. then thursday, just a slight hint of some cooling. starting to get into the inner for bay 4th of july, but still high fire danger. and those numbers inland in the mid to upper 90s and up to about 105 degrees, possibly in reach for some of those

11:53 pm

inland east bay valleys. as we approach the weekend, high pressure may recenter a little bit farther to the north, but we want to see here will be the return of a stratus surge coming up the coast to bring in those cooler temperatures inland. i think for the inner bay and the shoreline will get some of that cooling arriving after friday. as you can see, san francisco's downward trend of temperatures for the weekend. but also notice we're still in the 70s around san francisco as we head into the weekend. and there you can see as we head for our inland areas tuesday into next weekend, hot temperatures lasting for the next 5 to 7 days, maybe even longer. so stay tuned. all right, rob, thank you very much. we'll be right back. experience the olympics like never before, only with nbc bay area on peaco*ck. there's so much on the line from your local heroes to our national stars. one two for the united states with customized viewing options, exclusive content, and immersive new features, it's every moment, every medal your way. it's going
